Don’t Be A Victim of The IRS-Impersonation Telephone Scam

Take notice! We have heard from members of the professional community that CPA’s in Maryland are seeing an increase in the so-called “IRS-Impersonation Telephone Scam.” Specifically, victims are receiving phone calls that appear to be from the IRS where the caller demands immediate payment of amounts owed to the IRS. The callers are very convincing, sometimes providing fake names and IRS badge numbers, and they use a variety of threats in an attempt to coerce the victim in to making a payment. Be cautious if you receive an unexpected call from someone claiming to be from the IRS and remember, the IRS will never call to demand immediate payment, nor will they call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill. For more information on this and a variety of other IRS-related scams visit the IRS website.
