Baltimore, Md. – David Schriver, a Director in the Audit, Accounting and Consulting Department at Ellin & Tucker, one of the mid-Atlantic’s leading public accounting and business consulting firms, had the opportunity to speak at the Annual Meeting for the National Business Officer’s Association (NBOA) in San Diego, CA, March 3-6, 2019. Schriver, a published expert in audit, accounting, tax and management advisory services for independent schools and not-for-profit organizations, spoke about employee benefit plans.
Schiver’s presentation, “Navigating the Perils of Department of Labor Regulations”, focused on how benefit plan fiduciaries can consistently remain in the good graces of the Department of Labor (DOL). He provided a roadmap to navigate the complicated laws and procedures, many of which change quite often and without notice, typically without any guidance or instruction from the DOL. In addition to discussing how to follow the current regulations, he discussed the specific mistakes the DOL tends to look for and how to avoid any unnecessary attention.
“Plan administrators have enormous fiduciary responsibilities that are often overlooked or misunderstood,” said Schriver. “Ultimately, I want to help them do their job more effectively. I was honored to speak at NBOA to help shed light on the risks associated with employee benefit plans and dive into how fiduciaries can protect themselves and their employees from penalties and delays.”
One of Schriver’s key pieces of advice centered on the importance of utilizing the skills of a benefit plan specialist who truly understands and can avoid the potential pitfalls to which many plan sponsors fall victim.
