Baltimore, Md. — Ellin & Tucker, the Baltimore-based public accounting and business consulting firm, announced today that Michael A. Strauss, CPA, a director in the audit and accounting department, was unanimously appointed to the board of directors of the Advocates for Children and Youth (ACY) – an independent organization that advocates for the needs of children and families in Maryland. As a member of the board, Strauss will serve a three-year term to support the work of ACY and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance.
“Mike will be a valuable member of ACY’s board … he has tremendous character, a keen eye for detail and the proven ability to provide strategic, forward thinking thought leadership that spurs growth and progress,” said Edwin Brake, managing director of Ellin & Tucker. “His financial background will be a tremendous benefit to ACY as the organization works to influence policies that will improve the lives of families throughout Maryland.”
As a board member, Strauss will serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO, help to evaluate the impact of ACY, assist the board in identifying and recruiting other board members, and represent ACY to stakeholders, among other responsibilities. In addition to his position on the board, Strauss is also joining the ACY’s finance committee, where he will utilize his accounting background to assist ACY in matters related to budgeting, fundraising and other financial matters.
“The mission of this organization is very close to my heart,” said Strauss. “Having kids of my own, I think it’s extremely important to make sure that our children are healthy and safe. I am eager to work with the board to ensure that every child in Maryland is afforded the same opportunities, regardless of their socioeconomic status.”
A graduate of The Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, Strauss has more than 15 years of experience in the public accounting profession, providing financial reporting, tax, and compliance and management advisory services to privately held businesses and not-for-profit organizations. Strauss is the chairperson of Ellin & Tucker’s audit and accounting technical standards committee, which oversees programs to maintain the professional staff’s understanding of current accounting and financial reporting standards and ensures compliance with professional standards governed by the Financial Accounting Standards Board and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He is also a member of the finance committee of the University of Maryland Hillel, College Park campus.
ACY was founded in 1987 by a group of prominent child advocates in Maryland. Its mission is to identify problems, promote policies and programs that improve results for Maryland’s children in measurable and meaningful ways, and evaluate the effectiveness of programs and policies for the state’s children and youth.
